Our Philosophy

Cornerstone Academy of Clarinet builds a foundation of excellence in artistry for clarinetists of all ages and backgrounds. Exceptional quality instruction is vital for all musicians with private lessons being a critical component of anyone’s musical journey.

Cornerstone Academy of Clarinet strives to teach students not only how to become excellent clarinetists, but how to properly learn in order to transfer those skills to their band or orchestra program(s) as well as their daily lives. Our teaching approach is completely personalized to the student since each individual’s learning style is truly unique to them.

In addition to developing outstanding clarinet skills, Cornerstone Academy Students:

  • Develop outstanding clarinet skills

  • Build self-discipline

  • Improve confidence and poise

  • Learn goal-setting and problem-solving techniques

  • Learn time-management and organizational skills...

and foster a life-long journey of appreciation for music as an outlet for creativity, enjoyment, and philosophy.

Our highly trained cadre of clarinet instructors – hand selected by and including Cornerstone Academy of Clarinet Founder, Mentoring Instructor, and Professor of Clarinet Dr. Diane Barger – create and foster an extraordinary learning experience.

Dr. Barger’s personal philosophy of clarinet pedagogy was developed from those of world-renowned clarinet pedagogues Daniel Bonade and Stanley Hasty through her mentors Robert Marcellus and Frank Kowalsky.

In turn, Dr. Barger passes generations of world-class clarinet instruction to all Cornerstone Academy of Clarinet students. It is Dr. Barger’s hope they may someday carry on this tradition as well.

OPTION II

Study privately and exclusively with Dr. Diane Barger – Founder, Mentoring Instructor, and Professor of Clarinet – as well as receive the opportunity – at no extra charge – to attend and participate in her quarterly clarinet Foundation Seminar offered to all Cornerstone Academy students.

Note: Students wishing to study with Dr. Barger will be accepted based on limited availability due to her regular teaching and performing duties at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, and Moran Quintet. There is usually a waiting list and in the event there is no availability in her teaching schedule at the time of your entrance into Cornerstone Academy, you will be placed on the list on a first-come, first-serve basis for her next studio opening. Priority of placement will be given to the most advanced students.

Traveling Studio Lessons
Many of our instructors at Cornerstone Academy are available to travel to your home for your lesson, whether you live in Lincoln or elsewhere around the state. In addition to the regular lesson tuition, an additional travel fee for each lesson is necessary based on the mileage to and from the teaching site. (Final rate will be quoted after the initial phone interview.) Dr. Barger’s quarterly clarinet Foundation Seminar is offered at no extra charge to any student using this lesson option. However, the student is responsible for securing travel arrangements to Lincoln if they wish to attend. Attendance is not mandatory.
